Leading HIV Programs and Telling the Stories That Matter

My name is Mark Wandyaka, and I am the Country Director of Uganda at He Intends Victory, a Christian ministry serving individuals and communities affected by HIV/AIDS across 14 countries.

I lead the implementation of community-based HIV programs focused on young people and vulnerable groups—building support systems, strengthening treatment adherence, and coordinating teams delivering psychosocial care and peer mentorship across Uganda.

I have worked across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, engaging with communities, supporting program delivery, and learning from diverse HIV response models across the region.

I was born with HIV. That experience does not define my work—but it shapes how I lead it.

Alongside program leadership, I use documentary storytelling, public speaking, and community conversations to bring forward the lived realities behind HIV—challenging stigma, strengthening understanding, and connecting real experiences to broader conversations across Africa.

Insights From the Field

Field-based perspectives on HIV, leadership, and community systems

Living With HIV in Uganda Today

What it actually means to live with HIV in Uganda today—beyond treatment.

Drawing from my experience leading community-based HIV programs, this piece highlights the realities of adherence, stigma, and the social systems that shape outcomes for people living with HIV.

Born With HIV – Found Love At 30

Born with HIV, I once believed love was not meant for me. As I turn 30, I reflect on dating, stigma, and what it truly means to build a relationship beyond fear.

HIV Stigma Is Not About Ignorance

We’ve had decades of HIV awareness and access to treatment—so why does stigma still exist?

In this bold piece, Mark Wandyaka argues that stigma is no longer about ignorance, but about silence, culture, and failed leadership.

If people already know better, what’s really keeping stigma alive—and what must change?

Community Voices & Impact

Across the HIV programs and community engagements I lead, individuals and groups have shared how support systems, conversations, and peer networks have impacted their lives.

These voices reflect not just personal experiences—but the real outcomes of community-based HIV work across different African contexts.

Selected reflections from communities engaged through HIV programs and outreach across Uganda and the region.

“Thank you for sharing your story openly. It gave me courage to speak about my own experience with HIV.”

Community Member – Mozambique (Youth Support Group Participant)

“Your visit reminded us that people living with HIV are not statistics but real people with stories and faith.”
